What does the dental hygienist do?
The dental hygienist specialises in preventing and treating gum problems and in keeping your mouth healthy. During an appointment, plaque and tartar are removed professionally, including in places you cannot reach at home by brushing. The teeth are then polished.
The dental hygienist also looks at the condition of your gums and, where needed, measures the depth of the space between tooth and gum (pockets). In this way, early signs of problems are spotted in good time.
Why is dental hygiene so important?
Gum inflammation (gingivitis) is the most common oral condition and develops almost unnoticed: a little blood when brushing may seem harmless, but if left untreated it can progress to periodontitis, an inflammation of the jawbone in which teeth can eventually become loose. Healthy gums are also the foundation beneath every other treatment, from fillings to implants and aesthetic dentistry.
