From gingivitis to periodontitis
Gum inflammation (gingivitis) develops from plaque along the gum line and can be recognised by red, swollen or bleeding gums. At this stage the inflammation is fully reversible with good cleaning.
Left untreated, the inflammation can spread deeper towards the jawbone: periodontitis. The gums detach, deeper pockets form and the bone around the teeth slowly breaks down. In time, teeth can become loose. Signs include persistent bleeding gums, receding gums, an unpleasant taste or bad breath, and sensitive tooth necks.
How do we treat gum problems?
After a periodontal measurement, we map out the situation precisely. Treatment begins with a thorough professional cleaning, including below the gum line where your toothbrush cannot reach. You will also receive specific guidance to bring your oral hygiene at home up to standard, because without that any result remains temporary.
After a few months we measure again and decide on the next steps together: a maintenance schedule with the dental hygienist, additional treatment or, in advanced cases, referral to a periodontist.
More than your mouth
Periodontitis is linked to general health: smoking and diabetes increase the risk, and chronic gum inflammation places a burden on the whole body. Good gum care is therefore also an investment in your overall health.
